A village school is celebrating its ‘gold’ status recognising its outstanding commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to play, explore and thrive.
Hopton C of E Primary Academy, near Thetford and Diss, has been awarded gold in the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) primary programme following 18 months of dedicated work with a play expert and OPAL mentor.

Since beginning the programme, the school has transformed its outdoor spaces into vibrant areas where children can follow their interests, develop friendships and enjoy new experiences.
From digging and building in the giant sandpit to creating muddy concoctions in the mud kitchen, singing and dancing on the stage, or enjoying quieter spaces to read and chat with friends, there is something for everyone, the school said.
Jo Whiting, head of school, said: “We have been blown away by the impact that improving playtimes has had on our children, our staff and the whole school community.
“There is something to interest every child, from our mud kitchen and digging areas to quiet spaces where children can read and socialise with friends.
Sarah Grimmer, OPAL lead at Hopton, added: “Playtimes are so exciting for the children, and we have been delighted by the support of our local community in helping us develop the project.
“The children have the freedom to be children, use their imaginations and explore their interests. We are seeing how important it is that every child has the opportunity to play in a way that works for them.”
Sam Fletcher, OPAL mentor, who presented Hopton with its gold OPAL award, said: “The achievement reflects Hopton’s wider commitment to providing children with enriching experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
“The school also has on-site forest school provision, giving pupils opportunities to learn, explore and develop their confidence in the natural environment."
Hopton is keen to welcome more families into its school community, with places available from nursery to Year 6. The school offers free forest school sessions for two- to three-year-olds on Friday mornings.
